Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are among the most consequential drivers of extreme hydrometeorological hazards along extratropical coastlines, responsible for widespread flooding, landslides, and infrastructure failure. Of particular concern are compound events, where simultaneous extreme winds, saturated soils, and intense precipitation amplify impacts beyond single-metric thresholds, and the enhanced risk of consecutive ARs, in which repeated landfalls prevent watershed and infrastructure recovery, compounding societal and economic losses that single-event frameworks systematically underestimate.
We invite contributions on extreme ARs as drivers of compound, cascading hazards, as well as back-to-back AR landfalls limiting hydrologic and societal recovery. We particularly encourage studies connecting AR forecasting and modeling advances to hazard prediction, impact attribution, and actionable risk guidance. Submissions using observational data, numerical modeling, data assimilation, and AI/ML are welcome. We also encourage interdisciplinary work bridging the Atmospheric Sciences, Hydrology, and Natural Hazards communities, spanning regional to global scales and different socioeconomic contexts.
