Extratropical Cyclones: Past, Present, and Future

Session Description:
Extratropical cyclones (ETCs) are synoptic-scale systems that form with strong temperature gradients over land or oceans in the mid-latitude region. They are known for causing strong winds, heavy precipitation, blizzard conditions, and substantial storm surge. There are significant knowledge gaps regarding these storms including limitations with paleo- and historical records, inconsistent methodologies, and high computational costs that come with simulating ETCs due to their large scale and complex dynamics. Given these challenges, a streamlined approach to studying these storms in the past, present and future is necessary to understand the science behind these storms. This session aims to bring together interdisciplinary research that addresses these challenges by examining ETC hazards spanning multiple timescales. We welcome abstracts that explore geological and paleo-storm reconstructions, historical and instrumental observations, modeling studies, and climate projections to improve understanding of ETC impacts, variability, and implications for coastal risk management and resilience in a changing climate.
