Advancing Risk-Based Policy Through Computational Approaches, Remote Sensing, and Mechanistic Understanding of Climate-Driven Environmental Health Threats Including Emerging Contaminants, AMR, and Water-borne Disease

Session Description:
Emerging contaminants (PFAS, microplastics, glyphosate), antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and waterborne disease vectors pose escalating threats to ecosystems and public health. These risks are amplified by climate variability and extreme events that alter environmental transport pathways. However, traditional global monitoring faces significant cost and spatial constraints. To address these challenges, remote sensing combined with in-situ observations and computational tools offers powerful solutions for tracking contamination sources, mapping transport pathways, and generating risk indicators. This integrated approach supports environmental surveillance, early warning systems, and climate-resilient policy decisions. This session invites studies advancing: (1) remote sensing-informed risk mapping, (2) understanding contaminant behavior and AMR/disease dynamics following extreme events, and (3) developing satellite and field-based proxy indicators. These innovations integrate novel technologies (biosensors, eDNA, multi-omics) with advanced analytical approaches including machine learning, data fusion, and Bayesian spatial methods, ultimately enabling actionable risk assessment and evidence-based decision-making for protecting water security and public health.
