Ocean Mapping: The Interdisciplinary Use and Importance of Bathymetry

Session Description:
Bathymetric data provides the essential framework for ocean exploration, enabling deeper investigations of ocean processes and the discovery and management of seafloor resources. It underpins a wide range of applications, from navigational safety to preparedness for environmental hazards. Despite its importance and societal relevance, significant challenges remain in accessing and utilizing bathymetric data. Much of seafloor mapping work occurs in silos, limiting the return on investment in data acquisition and hindering responsible use of the offshore environment. 

This session explores how bathymetry can act as a unifying framework to connect disciplines, sectors and communities, advancing both scientific discovery and societal applications. We invite contributions that demonstrate practical uses of bathymetric data to address environmental and societal needs, innovative workflows for data collection, processing and sharing, and foster collaboration and community building. Submissions that highlight interdisciplinary studies and approaches that improve accessibility, integration, and impact of seafloor data are especially encouraged.
