Ocean Oxygen in the Past and Present

Session Description:
The amount and distribution of oxygen in our oceans drives critical nutrient cycles, constrains biogeography, and influences human uses from fisheries to tourism. Our understanding of oxygen variability in the ocean is informed by studying both the present conditions and past time periods, which allows us to contextualize anthropogenic and natural forcings, and create meaningful projections into the future. This session aims to bring together research constraining the influence of climate, productivity, and circulation on ocean oxygen and related nutrients (carbon, nitrogen, phosphate, iron) across spatial and temporal scales. We welcome contributions that integrate datasets from present and paleoceanography, geochemistry, sedimentology, and modeling to look at drivers of change in ocean oxygen and impacts on marine life, geochemical cycles, and the blue economy.
