Urban Areas and Global Change

Session Description:
We live in a rapidly urbanizing world undergoing unprecedented global change. Understanding and adapting to these changes require increasingly diverse methods and interdisciplinary perspectives across natural and social sciences. This session invites empirical, observational, and modeling studies on the biogeochemical, physical, and socio-ecological interactions of urban areas with Earth systems from local to global scales. We welcome perspectives from researchers and practitioners from diverse backgrounds, e.g., from natural and social scientists to engineers and planners. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Urban interactions with the environment (through landscapes, ecosystems, and/or atmosphere) across scales;
  • Urban water, energy, and biogeochemical cycles of the past, present, and future;
  • Urban-induced changes in spatiotemporal patterns of energy supply and use, transportation, food, water, waste, and/or greenhouse gas emissions;
  • Human and population dynamics of urban areas; and 
  • Influence of socioeconomic, socio-political, and institutional dynamics on urban policy, planning, and management.
