Session Description:
Cities concentrate emissions, exposure, and risk, but the urban atmosphere is not merely a passive boundary condition for human systems. Heat, turbulence, and air quality interact with the built environment and interdependent infrastructure networks (transport, power, water, buildings) in ways that can amplify or dampen hazards. These feedbacks are increasingly shaped by compound extremes (e.g., heatwaves with stagnation, wildfire-smoke intrusions coincident with infrastructure disruption) and by rapid, intervention-driven transitions such as urban greening, passive cooling, electrification, and structural mitigation and planning policies.
This session will connect urban climate science, atmospheric composition and air-quality research, and infrastructure-resilience modeling to advance understanding and decision-grade evaluation of urban atmosphere–infrastructure feedbacks. We invite contributions that combine observations, process modeling, and scenario analysis to determine urban heat, air quality, multi-hazard and compound-events which act as pathways for adaptation and mitigation strategies that account for bidirectional feedbacks between the atmosphere, urban form, and critical infrastructure networks.
