Science-Guided Solutions: Insights from the UCCRN Assessment on Climate Change and Cities

Session Description:
Cities alter the climate system both within their boundaries and nearby through interactions with impervious land surfaces, energy generation, and transportation systems. These processes that occur on urban scales are interacting with larger-scale climate change processes to exacerbate extreme events that impact urban dwellers. Based on the Urban Climate Change Research Network’s (UCCRN) Third Assessment Report on Climate Change and Cities, published by Cambridge University Press, this session will provide temperature, precipitation, and sea level rise projections for over 250 international cities. Presenters will share the latest peer-reviewed urban climate science on urban heat and precipitation islands, compound extreme events, and indicators and monitoring, including the use of remote sensing. This session will also feature science-informed policy recommendations that were co-developed with city stakeholders. Participants will gain access to new urban climate information and policy-relevant insights to inform actionable strategies for climate adaptation and mitigation in cities.
