Independent science is critical for understanding Earth systems, informing evidence-based decisions, and maintaining public trust—particularly as scientific findings increasingly intersect with political pressure and powerful economic interests. This session invites contributions that examine how scientific independence is protected, challenged, and put into practice across the geosciences and related fields.

We invite abstracts that explore threats to independent science such as censorship, manipulation, retaliation, or suppression of scientific findings, as well as successful strategies to defend scientific rigor and credibility. We welcome examples of safeguarding critical data, research, and science-based tools, including efforts to preserve and maintain independent science advisory committees. Moreover, we invite abstracts that help us understand the consequences of weakened scientific integrity and independence for communities, ecosystems, and democratic governance.

By bringing together researchers, practitioners, and advocates, this session aims to share practical lessons and foster dialogue ensuring science continues to serve the public good.
