A fundamental motivation for geoscience is developing knowledge and solutions that help address society’s most pressing issues. Insights from a variety of communities and disciplines, especially those that relate to social behavior, decision-making, history of science/social studies of science, and the humanities, are crucial to improving society’s ability to pursue evidence-based solutions. This session highlights talks that draw on theory, practice, and methods from the social and behavioral sciences (including but not limited to anthropology, economics, history, political science, decision science, psychology, philosophy, and sociology), the humanities, and practitioner communities that help enhance our understanding of science-society interactions and the societal impact of geosciences. We invite approaches, frameworks, stories or experiences that scientists and/or practitioners can use to improve science-society interactions, and especially, that support social and behavioral changes at multiple scales. Local or regional perspectives from the state of California are especially encouraged.
