Low-cost Air Quality Sensors: Challenges, Opportunities, and Collaborative Strategies across the World

Air pollution remains a major global challenge. Limited monitoring infrastructure hinders effective air quality (AQ) management. Addressing these challenges requires strong local and international collaboration. Accessible and affordable air quality sensors (low-cost sensor systems, LCS) are key tools for building capacity in resource-limited settings. This session will highlight best practices in using LCS to enhance AQ monitoring, forecasting, modeling, and public health initiatives. We encourage contributions that propose solutions for sensor quality assurance, uncertainty characterization, and calibration challenges; improve technical skills and data management; integrate sensor data with models and satellite observations; design effective networks; and address logistical hurdles in constrained environments. We also seek studies on the role of sensors in personal exposure and public health research, citizen engagement in AQ monitoring, and policy development, as well as sustainable and equitable frameworks for lasting local and international partnerships.
