Geophysical Advances with Distributed Fiber-Optic Sensing in Natural Systems

Session Description:
Fiber-optic sensing technologies, particularly Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), are transforming geophysics by enabling dense, long-range, long-duration, and cost-effective sensing across diverse environments. We invite submissions on recent developments in geophysical applications, including but not limited to seismic source characterization (e.g., earthquakes, volcanic activities, icequakes, oceanic processes, atmospheric phenomena); Earth’s structure imaging (e.g., urban, offshore, and cryosphere); environmental monitoring (e.g., dynamics of oceans, rivers, lakes, critical zones, groundwater, permafrost, and glaciers); and natural hazard mitigation (e.g., earthquakes, landslides, tsunami, and volcanic eruptions). We also encourage contributions on the scalability of fiber-optic sensing in geophysics, including real-time processing, compression, and end-to-end workflows that support effective use of the large-volume data. While DAS is the central focus of this session, we welcome exploratory work on alternative fiber-optic sensing technologies, such as long-range systems for subsea cables, polarization sensing, or transmission-based systems.
