Geologic Hydrogen Recovery and Stimulation: From Reservoir Processes to Techno-Economic and Life-Cycle Performance

Session ID#: 283050

Session Description:
Geologic hydrogen is gaining attention as a potentially transformative primary energy resource, but significant engineering and systems-level gaps remain between discovery and commercial development. This session focuses on the coupled science and engineering needed to recover naturally accumulated subsurface hydrogen and to stimulate hydrogen generation in geologic formations in energy- and resource-efficient ways. We invite contributions on reservoir engineering, production strategies, water-rock reaction engineering, permeability enhancement, and coupled thermal, hydrological, mechanical, chemical, and biological processes. Topics also include modeling and simulation of hydrogen generation, migration, storage, recovery, separation, and production; integrated field development, including wells, monitoring, and surface facilities; economic analysis; environmental performance, including carbon intensity, water use, and land impacts; uncertainty, risk, and decision-making; case studies; comparisons with other low-carbon energy technologies; and enabling policy, regulatory, finance, and market frameworks. The session encourages interdisciplinary work connecting subsurface processes, engineering performance, economics, sustainability, and responsible large-scale deployment.
