Physical Properties of Earth Materials (PPEM): Coupled Processes and Feedbacks in Deformation

Session Description:
Deformation arises from the interplay of mechanical, chemical, and thermal processes operating across a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Feedbacks among these processes—such as deformation-enhanced reactions, fluid–rock interactions, strain localization, and microstructural evolution—can fundamentally alter material properties and govern the transition between brittle/frictional failure, viscous flow, and intermediate behaviors. These couplings link microscale mechanisms to emergent macroscale phenomena such as faulting, mantle convection, and lithospheric evolution. This session focuses on understanding how coupled processes and feedbacks control the deformation of rocks, minerals, and analog materials from planetary interiors to surfaces. We welcome contributions grounded in laboratory experiments, field observations, geophysical measurements, and theoretical or numerical models to explore the interactions among deformation, reaction, transport, and microstructural evolution across scales.
