Grand Challenges for Geodetic Science and Engineering in 21st-Century Society

Session Description:
Geodesy is foundational to modern geospatial science and technology, underpinning applications from Earth and space exploration to climate resilience, navigation, communications, and global security. Emerging demands such as autonomous systems, digital twins, infrastructure, and AI-driven Earth observation, are expanding the scope of problems that require a solid foundation in geodetic science. This session invites abstracts that articulate key scientific and engineering problems whose solutions would most significantly advance geodesy and its contributions to society. We welcome submissions that frame open research questions, postulate new research areas, present industry needs, inform priority curriculum, and propose new sensors and satellite missions. Topics may include reference frame realization and maintenance, next-generation GNSS and InSAR applications, Earth and lunar monitoring, and national security issues. We encourage contributions examining how academic programs, government agencies, and industry can align training, funding, and collaboration strategies to ensure these problems are addressed by a skilled and growing workforce.
