Probing the Radiation Belts and Magnetotail from Low Altitudes: Energetic Particle Precipitation and Magnetosphere–Ionosphere Coupling

Session Description:
Low-altitude observations of energetic particle fluxes provide a critical complement to ground-based observations and high-altitude spacecraft in probing Earth’s magnetosphere. Datasets from NOAA/MetOp, ELFIN, CIRBE, and REAL satellites provide unique opportunities to investigate Earth’s magnetotail, radiation belts, and the impacts of energetic particle precipitation on the ionosphere. This session solicits studies that utilize low-altitude observations in combination with complementary datasets, including all-sky imagers, radars, and ground-based magnetometers, as well as equatorial spacecraft missions such as THEMIS, MMS, and Arase. Contributions incorporating numerical simulations and data–model comparisons are also encouraged. Topics include substorm-related magnetotail reconfiguration, charged particle acceleration and precipitation during injections, storm-time ring current evolution and radiation belt dynamics, and magnetosphere–ionosphere coupling via field-aligned currents and precipitating particle energy flux. We particularly encourage contributions that integrate multi-instrument observations and modeling efforts that advance system-level understanding and support preparation for the upcoming CINEMA mission.
