Long-term Seafloor Sensing for Climate and Disaster Risk Reduction using Submarine Cables

Session Description:
New ocean and earth observing based on using submarine telecommunication cable infrastructure is becoming reality, alongside advances in dedicated scientific cable observatories. The goal is a real-time, sustained, operational, global spanning network for climate, ocean (circulation, heat content, sea level rise), geophysics, and earthquake and tsunami early warning, per the SMART Cables Initiative (Science Monitoring And Reliable Telecommunications, ITU/WMO/UNESCO-IOC JTF SMART Cables). In 2027, the Portuguese Atlantic CAM and the Vanuatu-New Caledonia Tamtam SMART systems will be installed. Complementary to this, optical fiber sensing methods are under continued development, including basin-crossing approaches.

Submissions are welcome that address all aspects, including challenges, sensors, new enabled sensing techniques (e.g., seismometers as low frequency hydrophones, ambient noise interferometry, ocean acoustic tomography, geodesy), observations in regions of interest, maritime domain awareness, data management, and transition into the SMART Cables Network of the Global ocean Observing System (GOOS).
