Quaternary Climate and Environmental Change: Proxies, Processes, and Models

Session Description:
Over the past few decades, advances in the analysis of physical, geochemical, and biological signatures preserved in lake sediments have substantially enhanced our understanding of past climate and environmental history. These proxy-based reconstructions provide real-world targets for climate model validation. However, direct comparison between proxy data and model output remains challenging due to noise, biases, and non-linear responses inherent in proxy data. To bridge this gap, proxy system models have been developed, enabling direct comparison of proxy data with model output and facilitating a more comprehensive understanding of past climate and environmental change.

This session invites contributions from all aspects of lake-sediment-based paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental studies covering the Quaternary period, including but not limited to: conventional approaches, the use of lipid biomarkers and their stable-isotope compositions (e.g., δ2H, δ13C), data-model comparisons, studies of modern systems and proxy calibrations, as well as the application and development of proxy system models.
