Modeling GHG Fluxes from Agriculture and Land Use for Policy Applications: From Public Data to Decisions

Changes in agriculture and land management practices, coupled with an evolving data landscape, are driving the need for innovative data sources and adaptable modeling approaches to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and removals. This session highlights advances in applications-focused models that leverage publicly available datasets, including remote sensing, geospatial products, and other open data streams, to capture spatially resolved dynamics in the agriculture, forestry, and other land-use sectors spanning 1990 to the present. This session features presentations that demonstrate practical applications for policy, national and state-level GHG inventories, carbon markets, and land management, as well as methods that enhance transparency, reproducibility, and scalability. Emphasis is placed on streamlined approaches that balance rigor with usability, enabling broader adoption by scientists, practitioners, and decision-makers. This session aims to advance accessible, policy-relevant insights into emissions trends and mitigation opportunities in agriculture and land use.
