Modeling and Untangling Atmosphere-Hydrology-Ecology Interactions

Session Description:
This session explores how high-resolution land surface and coupled terrestrial modeling can improve understanding and prediction of terrestrial water, energy, and biogeochemical cycles, with a particular focus on atmosphere-hydrology-ecology interactions during extreme events. Hyper-resolution modeling at scales ~1 km or finer requires innovations in process representation, ML/GeoAI, data assimilation, and high-resolution model-data fusion and validation. We welcome contributions that (i) quantify hydrologic and ecosystem responses to extremes, (ii) diagnose land–atmosphere feedbacks that modulate extremes, and (iii) identify mechanisms linking hydrology–ecology–atmosphere interactions. Topics may include multiscale hydrologic and ecological processes, predictive modeling of extreme events, coupled ecosystem-atmosphere dynamics, and land-ocean interactions that inform sustainable environmental management. This interdisciplinary session aims to connect methodological advances with process understanding and prediction relevant to water security, food production, and ecosystem resilience across environmental and socioeconomic transitions.
