Applications at the Intersection of Science, Practice, and Policy to Proactively Address Natural Hazard Risk

Session Description:
Despite advances in defining and assessing natural hazards, a disconnect remains between science and practice when translating scientific advances into risk-transfer instruments that mitigate impacts to people’s lives and livelihoods. This session aims to bridge this gap by gathering people involved in projects with an applied emphasis to improve (1) assessments of natural hazards, exposure, and vulnerability, and (2) the design and deployment of tools to address risk. This session welcomes submissions exploring innovative uses of earth observations, weather data, physical models, and forecasts to address hazards including droughts, wildfires, tropical cyclones, flooding, or extreme temperatures. We aim to foster closer connection among academic and applied communities, enhancing the efficacy of risk-transfer products (e.g., index/parametric insurance, catastrophe bonds, and forecast-based financing) that can protect vulnerable communities as well as induce resilience building behavior.
