Linking Land and Water: Mechanisms of Solute Transfer Across Ecosystems

Session Description:
The linkages between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems are a critical and understudied component of biogeochemical cycles. Terrestrial sources (both natural and anthropogenic) of dissolved constituents, including organic and inorganic solutes, often dominate stream inputs and regulate aquatic ecosystem function, water quality, and elemental cycling. However, transformations of these solutes across the land–water interface remain poorly described. This session will explore methods and approaches to quantifying solute sources, transport, and transformations across the land–water continuum.
We invite submissions investigating the interface of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems with respect to the transport and transformation of dissolved materials, including carbon, nutrients, and other solutes. Laboratory and field observations, experiments, and modeling studies from natural and managed ecosystems across all latitudes are welcome. We particularly encourage contributions that use multiple modes of inquiry (e.g. geochemical characterization, fluxes, microbiome characterization, modeling) and/or spanning spatial scales (e.g. pore space to catchment, headwaters to continent).
