Session Description:
Porous media are hotspots of biogeochemical activity, where steep chemical gradients drive coordinated microbial metabolisms, redox-driven mineral transformations, and reactive transport. Understanding these coupled processes at the pore scale is essential to advance predictive models of carbon, nutrient, and metal cycling in natural and engineered systems. This session invites contributions that investigate the interplay between microbial behavior, geochemical gradients, and fluid dynamics across pore to continuum scales, with emphasis on biofilm-fluid interactions and redox-driven processes. We welcome experimental and numerical studies that advance mechanistic understanding of these systems. Topics include, but are not limited to, biofilm formation, biomineral precipitation and dissolution, microbially-mediated reactive transport, and geochemical heterogeneity at microbe-mineral interfaces. Relevant approaches include microfluidic experimental systems, advanced multi-modal imaging of pore-scale processes, direct numerical simulations, and pore-scale reactive transport modeling.
