California’s Fifth Climate Change Assessment launches in 2026, marking the culmination of five years of scoping, developing partnerships, and coordinating research. This portfolio of novel research and tools will strengthen the state’s understanding of climate vulnerability and support decision-makers and communities in implementing strategic climate solutions. In this session, panelists will discuss the state’s unique process in developing more than 65 reports – including community engagement from inception through the rollout of its products; commissioning universities, community-based organizations, and other experts for original research; and launching a first-of-its-kind Tribal Research Program. Panelists will also discuss the potential impact of such assessments on decision-making at scale.  The California Climate Assessment aims to bridge the gap between local adaptation needs, statewide priorities, and global processes of change.  California’s prominent leadership in climate change research is more important than ever in setting the tone for science-informed decision-making and action across sectors and geographies.
