Global Innovations in Rapid Earthquake and Tsunami Characterization and Response

Session Description:
Large earthquakes and tsunamis remain among the most impactful natural hazards. Rapid source characterization within seconds to hours is necessary to effectively support early warning and emergency response. Recent complex sequences such as the 2023 Türkiye-Syria and 2025 Kamchatka earthquakes, and non-earthquake tsunamigenic events like the 2022 Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption demonstrate that current operational systems should continue to improve to better provide critical data quickly following a significant event.

In this session we aim to showcase recent scientific and operational innovations that bridge the gap between real-time data acquisition and actionable impact information. We seek contributions detailing advances in rapid source characterization from event-detection through to source characterization and impact estimation, ocean-based tsunami observations, and the integration of emerging technologies like machine learning. We also encourage presentations that focus on the challenges of operational and automated systems, and strategies for rapid science communication to decision-makers.
