Soft Earth Geophysics: Bridging Soft Matter Physics and the Geosciences

Session Description:
Earth's surface is a thin, fragile, far-from-equilibrium skin. Earthquakes, glaciers and geophysical mass flows emerge from the same soft matter physics that govern granular materials, foams, gels, colloids, and active suspensions. Yet, these communities rarely meet. 

This Union session launches a convergent agenda --- Soft Earth Geophysics --- translating emerging soft matter frameworks to grand challenges in natural hazards and Earth-surface processes. This new community was launched at the 2026 KITP workshop on Soft Earth Geophysics, and wants to find a home in an AGU Union session. 

We bring scientists spanning condensed matter physics, granular and suspension rheology, fault mechanics, cryosphere science, and geomorphology together to confront questions such as: What drives athermal creep to catastrophic failure? How do Earth materials encode the memory of past flow? What unifies brittle-to-ductile yielding across landslides, faults, and ice? A moderated discussion and companion poster session will welcome broad community engagement.
