El Niño 2026: Linking Seasonal Forecasts to Agri-Food Risk and Population Vulnerability

Session Description:
The anticipated 2026 El Niño presents compounding risks to agri-food systems through altered precipitation regimes, drought intensification, and cascading supply chain disruptions across teleconnected regions. Quantifying where, when, and how these shocks translate into food insecurity and population exposure remains a critical scientific and operational challenge.

This session advances methods for linking seasonal-to-subseasonal forecasts with spatially explicit agri-food risk analytics and population vulnerability assessments. We invite contributions on: (1) global and regional seasonal forecast skill for El Niño-driven hazards; (2) crop modeling and food system impact pathways under ENSO forcing; (3) geospatial analytics quantifying exposed populations and livelihood systems; and (4) anticipatory, risk-informed decision frameworks connecting forecast intelligence to early action by governments and humanitarian actors.

Contributions integrating Earth observation, AI-driven downscaling, compound risk assessment, and equity-focused exposure analysis across South Asia, East Africa, and Latin America are particularly encouraged.
