Subseasonal to Seasonal Tropical Variability: Observations, Modeling, Processes, and Global Impacts

Session Description:
The subseasonal to seasonal (S2S) modes of tropical variability, such as the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), El NiƱo Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and monsoon systems, have significant socioeconomic impacts. These modes influence both local and global atmospheric circulation through tropospheric and stratospheric teleconnection pathways, providing a primary source of predictability for S2S forecasts. This session solicits abstracts on studies of tropical S2S variability dynamics and global teleconnections using a wide range of approaches, including but not limited to observations,modeling, prediction, and machine-learning techniques. We particularly welcome studies that examine key S2S processes including ocean-land-atmosphere interactions, stratosphere-troposphere coupling, the connections between subseasonal modes with other climate modes across timescales such as the MJO, Quasi-Biennial Oscillation, ENSO, the Indian Ocean Dipole, and extratropical influences on the tropics. We also invite contributions addressing the health, socio-economic and societal impacts of extreme events on S2S timescales.
