Advancing Environmental Security and Adaptive Management in a Rapidly Transforming World

Session Description:
Societies, communities, and nations rely on the environment to provide essential services, resources and quality of life. However, little has been done on how on resource decisions and by extension the technological and research-based inputs to those decisions, shape present risks and can lead to environmental insecurity and instability. This session explores how the interaction of data, knowledge, and governance can better enable adaptive management in a rapidly transforming world.  The session includes cases and frameworks that contribute to:

  • Understanding and characterizing systemic risks including those arising from aging infrastructure, vulnerability, and system (water, land, ecosystems) depletion
  • Technical alternatives including AI applications to traditional risk assessment approaches
  • Disaster science and multi-hazard early warning, e.g. for droughts, floods and wildfires, at different scales
  • Challenges and approaches for scaling up from single project-based missions
  • Developing adaptive governance and applications, in academia, public, and the private sector for advancing resilience
