Unveiling Ecological Thresholds to Heatwaves and Extreme Temperatures: Insights from Urban, Terrestrial, Freshwater and Marine Systems

Session Description:
The role of extreme weather events in driving ecological change has increased as heatwaves and other co-occurring climate anomalies become more frequent and severe across the globe. In contrast to chronically rising temperatures associated with global climate change, heatwaves leave little time for acclimation and adaptation, often pushing biota past critical functional thresholds and increasing vulnerability to compounding environmental stressors. The ability of organisms to persist through these extremes is expected to play an increasingly critical role in determining ecological resistance and resilience into the future.
This session will focus on the implications of severe heatwaves for terrestrial, freshwater, marine, and urban ecosystems, along with insights related to how these ecosystems can acclimate to a future characterized by high temperatures and other climatic extremes. Submissions that apply a range of approaches to evaluate ecosystem and organismal responses to these climate change stressors in experimental/controlled and observational studies are welcome.
