Earth science benefits society, and most research across AGU sections is supported by federal funding. In the U.S., 2023 federal support for academic research in the geosciences, atmospheric sciences, and oceanic sciences was more than double the support from all non-federal sources combined.  While federal funding remains essential for knowledge generation and scientific advancement, there is growing interest in the potential for academic researchers and large laboratories to engage with the private sector.  These connections can support innovative science, such as the growth in commercial application of Earth observations, climate data for improved risk management, and geospatial AI for agricultural or energy decision-making. This Union session examines approaches for strengthening connections between research and industry needs across sectors such as energy, agriculture, transportation, and insurance. Experiences and case studies welcome from all perspectives.
