Earth Surface Processes and the Global Carbon Cycle

Session Description:
The carbon cycle plays a central role in Earth's climate system and in regulating long-term planetary habitability. While many biogeochemical reactions contribute to carbon transformations, Earth surface processes play an important modulating role through their influences on reaction timescales, the physical properties of soils/sediments, and mass fluxes. Here, we solicit contributions that investigate couplings between surface processes (e.g., erosion, fluid flow, and sediment deposition) and carbon cycling (organic and/or inorganic) across environments. We welcome submissions across a range of spatial (soil, hillslope, watershed, global) and temporal scales (modern to the geological past). Contributions may span from field studies to laboratory experiments, proxy studies utilizing isotope geochemistry, and theoretical or modeling research. By bringing together researchers in surface processes, biogeosciences, hydrology, and everything in between, we aim to build a holistic understanding of the carbon cycle. We welcome student submissions and aim to give talks to a diverse range of researchers.
