Applying Advanced Stratigraphic Methods to Site Characterization for Remediation and Infrastructure Projects

Session Description:
In sedimentary aquifers, groundwater flow and mass transport/storage are largely controlled by geometries and spatial distributions of high- and low-permeability sediments. Therefore, understanding the site stratigraphy is critical for any hydrogeological investigation. This session will showcase how advanced stratigraphic analytical methods, including sequence stratigraphy, facies analysis, and depositional modeling, can reduce uncertainty in complex subsurface environments, especially when integrated with traditional approaches of hydrogeological and geophysical analysis and modeling.

We invite contributions demonstrating how integrating detailed geologic logging, modern analogs, and stratigraphic frameworks improves site conceptual models for remediation and infrastructure design. Topics include linking stratigraphy to aquifer heterogeneity, well performance, contaminant transport, and geochemical variability. Emphasis will be placed on reconciling geologic history with observational datasets to produce defensible, predictive interpretations of the subsurface.

By elevating stratigraphy within multidisciplinary workflows, this session aims to advance best practices for groundwater investigations and remediation solutions.
