Advances in Mountain Ecohydrology: Coupled Snow, Water, and Vegetation Dynamics Under Stress

Mountains contribute up to half of the world’s water supply. Because of their physiographic complexity, they also uniquely integrate ecological, hydrological, cryospheric, and geomorphological processes, which render these systems highly sensitive to environmental change. Forecasting water availability and ecosystem services depends on accurately characterizing the interactions among rapidly changing mountain processes, including snow dynamics, groundwater recharge, glacier and permafrost degradation, evapotranspiration, and vegetation demography. We welcome submissions examining how these linkages structure responses to drought, disturbance, and hydroclimatic extremes across scales and biomes. Topics of interest include: changing precipitation and temperature regimes and their ecohydrological consequences; mortality and recovery in mountain plant communities; permafrost thaw; and the role of extremes such as atmospheric rivers and glacial collapse in restructuring mountain ecosystems. Studies that bridge field observation and process-based or data-driven modeling are especially encouraged. Join us in a cross-disciplinary dialogue to improve prediction of ecohydrological trajectories in changing mountain systems.
