Fallow to Fuel: Coupling Biofuel Production with Carbon, Nutrient, and Water Dynamics in Agricultural Landscapes

Session Description:
Fallow-season biofuel feedstocks such as harvested camelina, carinata, pennycress, winter canola, and winter rye offer a pathway to integrate energy production with carbon storage, nutrient retention, and water quality in working agricultural landscapes. This session focuses on biofuel production from intermediate crops and their interactions with biogeochemical and hydrologic processes across field to watershed to regional scales. We invite contributions on crop yield estimation, life cycle emissions, ecosystem impacts, and technoeconomic feasibility of integrating oilseed feedstocks into existing agricultural systems. Topics include soil carbon dynamics, nutrient cycling, water quality responses, supply chain logistics, refinery integration, and policy frameworks. By linking biofuel production with carbon, nutrient, and water dynamics, this session advances understanding of agricultural systems as coupled energy–environment systems.
