Extreme Weather and Hydroclimatic Hazards in South Asia: From Climate Drivers to Health Impacts

Session Description:
South Asia, home to more than two billion people, is susceptible to intensifying weather and climate extremes that pose risks to lives, public health, livelihoods, water resources, agriculture, and infrastructure. This session brings together researchers to present advances in understanding the mechanisms, drivers, and consequences of extreme weather and climate events across the region. We welcome contributions addressing: 

  • Climate variability and extremes shaped by local processes, including mountain meteorology, intraseasonal oscillations (MISO, MJO), and  teleconnections (ENSO, IOD), using observations and models.
  • Hydrometeorological extremes like floods, droughts, extreme rainfall, glacial-lake outbursts, compound events, and their impacts on water resources using hydrological modeling and observations.
  • Spatiotemporal variability in air quality, including aerosols, pollution episodes, smog, and wildfire smoke, and impacts on weather and climate, public health, food security, and transportation.
  • Interactions among climate variability, human influences, exposure, and resilience.
  • Integrated air–water–health nexus studies evaluating hazards. 

This session informs decision-making across South Asia.
