Extreme Water Levels, Sea-Level Rise, and Land Subsidence: Risk Assessment and Coastal Adaptation

Session Description:
Coastal flooding risks are increasing worldwide due to the combined effects of sea-level rise, storm surge, tides, and vertical land motion, including land subsidence. These interacting processes elevate extreme water levels and intensify hazards to infrastructure, ecosystems, and coastal communities. This session invites contributions that improve understanding and prediction of extreme water levels under changing climatic and geophysical conditions. We welcome studies integrating observations, modeling, and theory to quantify relative sea-level rise, subsidence and uplift, storm surge, and compound flooding for coastal risk assessment and decision support. Contributions using tide gauges, satellite observations, InSAR, GNSS, statistical or process-based models, and artificial intelligence or machine learning approaches are encouraged. We also seek studies on hazard assessment and adaptation, including nature-based solutions, engineered defenses, infrastructure resilience, and groundwater and subsidence management. The session aims to bring together a global community of researchers and practitioners to advance actionable knowledge for coastal resilience.
