Extreme Sea Levels: Modeling, Impacts,and Risk Management

Session Description:
Extreme sea levels can lead to hazardous events with wide-ranging environmental, societal, and economic consequences, as experienced during the devastating 2023 and 2024 Atlantic hurricane seasons. In combination with sea-level rise and potential changes in storminess, waves, and tides, the adverse consequences of extreme oceanographic events are projected to escalate worldwide in many coastal regions. Integrated impact assessments can inform adaptive decisions in coupled human-natural systems. This session seeks contributions that: examine present-day and future extreme sea levels at local-to-global scales using physics-based, statistical, or machine learning models; assess impacts associated with extreme sea levels such as flooding, beach/dune erosion, salt water intrusion, or ecosystem degradation; explore societal thresholds and adaptation options under deep uncertainty; or report outcomes of interdisciplinary collaborations among engineers, natural, social, and economic scientists, stakeholders, and policy makers. Together, these contributions are essential for developing actionable and sustainable knowledge to address rising coastal hazards.
