Session Description:
Wopasi Pazo is an Indigenous‑led initiative building a sovereign environmental data system for the Oceti Sakowin Oyate. The project responds to generations of inequitable access to environmental data by creating tribally governed infrastructure rooted in Lakota knowledge, kinship, and treaty rights. Its work aims to protect relatives such as the sacred Black Hills from threats including mining, pollution, climate change, and aquifer depletion. We seek mutual support in an isolated disciplinary area.
This session invites presentations on technical, scientific, and community‑driven applications related to Indigenous (environmental) Data Sovereignty. Topics may include environmental‑report extraction pipelines, water‑quality and satellite‑data integration, natural‑language query systems, and tools that strengthen Tribal AI capacity. Contributions highlighting culturally grounded approaches or collaborations across ecology, computer science, and Indigenous knowledge systems are also welcome.
The session aims to showcase emerging models for tribally governed data systems (especially those utilizing AI) and strengthen networks supporting Indigenous‑led environmental stewardship.
