Environmental Change and Impacts to Indigenous and Traditional Communities

Session Description:
Earth system transformations (e.g., land-use, climate and ecosystem changes) impact Indigenous and Traditional Communities worldwide. The vital relationship to Land (water/sky/rock/life) that Indigenous Peoples and Communities maintain can heighten their vulnerability to these transformations. Yet, through the application of Traditional Knowledges, Indigenous Peoples and Communities also contribute to environmental revitalization and stewardship while upholding their responsibilities and connections to the more-than-human world. This session, organized by the AGU Indigenous Task Force, welcomes contributions that investigate environmental change and impacts to Indigenous and Traditional Communities from a range of disciplines, including but not limited to: geosciences, ecology, anthropology, and sociology. We are especially interested in providing a space for interdisciplinary research that integrates Indigenous and Traditional Communities' epistemologies into their work. Contributions involving community-engaged work should exemplify ethical and responsible practices.
