T23D:
Deciphering Active Faults: Properties, Processes and Activity Assessment II Posters
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 45322
Session Description:
Active faults and related fault damage zones that occur at shallow crustal depths are closely related to the long-term faulting history of seismogenic crust. Assessment of faults and their recent activity have direct societal applications to the mitigation of earthquake hazards, especially the identification of near-term seismic potential, the recurrence pattern of such fault activity, long-term seismic faulting behavior and the tectonic environment of active faults and fault damage zones. Importantly, direct access to active faults by drilling and trenching has become more common. This session will integrate research from different disciplines encompassing the properties and processes of faults and damage zones, rupture/slip attributes (including thermal transients), dating of fault rock materials, fault zone hydrology and stress-state determinations from field, trenching and fault drilling studies. We invite contributions from geological, geophysical, geochemical, thermochronological and experimental deformation studies that can elucidate these issues.
