T41E:
Fold-Thrust Belts Through the Eyes of Their Foreland Basins: The Sedimentary Record of Hinterland Tectonics, Surface Processes, and Basin Evolution II Posters

Submit an Abstract to this Session

Session ID#: 49795

Session Description:
Foreland basin systems are among the largest sediment storage regions on Earth and chronicle complex spatio-temporal interactions between tectonics, climate, surface processes, eustasy, isostasy, and lithology. Genetic linkages between fold-thrust belt shortening, orogenic loading, and foreland flexure make foreland basins ideal settings to elucidate the timing, mechanisms, and coupling of deformation, sediment routing, and deposition.  The goal of this session is to highlight innovative methodologies, cross-disciplinary studies, and unresolved questions in the evolution of fold-thrust belts and their resulting foreland basin systems.

We welcome regional case studies that address topics including hinterland deformation, lithospheric flexure, basin development, and surface processes, as well as topical studies on structural complications (broken forelands, salt tectonics, tectonic backstops), exhumation and paleo-elevation, sediment transport, source-to-sink dynamics, geomorphology, and mass balance. Studies utilizing and integrating thermochronology, exposure dating, geochemical proxies, provenance analysis, and numerical modeling of tectonic, surface, and depositional processes are encouraged.
