Coupled tectonic and depositional systems in the Eastern Himalaya, Bengal Basin and Fan Posters

Session Description:
Cross-disciplinary studies of the Bengal Fan, Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta, IndoBurman Ranges and Eastern Himalayas illuminate links between regional tectonics, climate, surface processes, sediment dispersal patterns and seismic hazards from the early Cenozoic to present-day. Himalaya-derived sediments filling the Bengal Basin are partly recycled within the subaerial IndoBurman forearc and dispersed to the Bengal Fan, forming the largest depositional system on Earth. Rapid sediment production and delivery in tandem with active tectonics produces a dynamic geologic setting that underpins human habitation of this densely-populated region. We aim to bring together researchers across disciplines studying any aspect of development of the Bengal Basin and Fan, and Eastern Himalayas to highlight links between tectonic and deltaic processes in a living landscape. We especially invite studies in the fields of: geophysics, geology, paleoclimatology, sedimentology, geochemistry, geomorphology, geohazards, geochronology, and paleoseismology, and IODP 354 over any range of spatial and temporal scales in this exemplary system.
