T31B:
Crystallographic Fabrics and Microstructures: Geodynamic Marker of Earth's History and Today's Internal Structure I
Submit an Abstract to this Session
Session ID#: 57177
Session Description:
We have seen major advances and widespread access to laboratory-based texture-measuring devices, such as the SEM/EBSD technique, which has dramatically expanded our knowledge of crystallographic fabrics and microstructures. Using natural samples, numerical simulations and experimental studies over a wide range of pressure and temperature conditions, fabrics and microstructures of minerals in the crust and mantle have been investigated. The fabrics are not only key tools to infer the rheology of the deep Earth’s interior, but also they are the link between the seismic record and today’s internal structure. Thus, the goal of this session is to bring together researchers from many disciplines to present recent research on crystallographic fabrics and microstructures of various minerals in the crust and mantle. We hope to foster new discussion and prompt new directions for decrypting the present-day and past dynamics and structure of the Earth’s interior.
