T41C:
Multiscale Processes Influencing Tectonics and Earthquakes at Plate Boundary Fault Systems I

Session ID#: 60291

Session Description:
New insights into the underlying physics of plate boundary systems have significantly influenced probabilistic hazard seismic hazard models in active tectonic regions. Here, we aim to improve our understanding of plate boundaries from the Earth’s surface through the lithosphere and their relevance to natural hazards and society. Understanding linkages between shallow, deep, and fault zone tectonic processes is critical; for example, complexities in crustal materials and fault zones can control rupture propagation direction and rupture across segment boundaries that may cascade into larger events. This session highlights the underlying physics and spatio-temporal patterns of plate boundary systems from observational data and modeling ranging in scale from shallow fault zones to plate boundaries. The session focuses on multiscale data integration, including geophysical studies of seismicity, source inversions, geodetics, structural models, and numerical modeling, as well as geologic studies of surface processes, geochemical and laboratory analyses, and paleoseismic observations.
