Atmospheric Ice Nucleating Particles and Their Impacts On Cloud Microphysics: Laboratory, Field and Modeling Studies

Session ID#: 72308

Session Description:
Characterizing ice nucleating particles and gaining process-level understanding of cirrus and mixed phase cloud microphysics is essential for determining how clouds interact with the Earth’s energy budget and hydrological cycle. Ice particle formation by homogeneous or heterogeneous freezing is initiated by liquid droplets or ice nucleating particles, respectively, resulting in the formation of mixed-phase or completely glaciated clouds. In some clouds, the impact of ice nucleating particles is augmented by consequential action of additional microphysical processes: the Wegener-Bergeron-Findeisen process, riming, and secondary ice production. Numerical representation and fundamental understanding of ice nucleating particles, primary ice nucleation, and subsequent freezing processes remains limited. This session welcomes contributions from laboratory, field, and modeling studies aimed at improving our understanding of sources and physicochemical characteristics of atmospheric ice nucleating particles, and studies that quantify the potential microphysical impacts of ice nucleating particles (including historical and/or recent measurements of those particles) in clouds.
