Advances in quantifying impacts and extents of land-use/land-cover change on hydrology.
Session ID#: 72615
Session Description:
Land-use and land cover change (LULC), including irrigated agriculture, have the potential to drastically alter the hydrologic cycle. The emerging challenges of land system changes are (1) Observing/estimating land-use, land-cover change, or irrigation amount and extents; (2) Quantifying/predicting subsequent hydrologic and land/atmosphere impacts. This session invites submissions that use emerging geospatial techniques (remote sensing, modeling, assimilation of observed vegetation characteristics, and in situ observations) to quantify hydrologically-relevant landscape change and/or examine LULC impacts on: (i) Interactions/feedbacks across surface and groundwater interfaces (ii) Regional climate/drought characteristics; (iii) Hydro-chemical fluxes and nutrient cycling. We welcome studies exploring disturbance from natural versus anthropogenic sources and the uncertainty in selection of land cover datasets, statistical methods, or numerical modeling.
This session encourages contributions celebrating AGU's Centennial and documenting the evolution of LULC changes and our current understanding over time, including contributions that discuss future directions/needs of advancing understanding of hydrologic impacts of these changes.
