Circum-Tibetan Plateau basin and orogen systems: Archives of tectonic deformation and surface processes

Session ID#: 74403

Session Description:
The geologic records of Indian-Asian continental collision are held in numerous orogen-basin systems that mark the peripheries of the Tibetan Plateau, including the Pamir, Tian Shan, Altyn Tagh, Qilian, Kunlun, Longmen Shan, and Himalaya mountain ranges and their adjacent basins. Variations in the geologic and geodynamic evolution of these orogen-basin systems are the manifestation of both the growth and evolution of the Tibetan Plateau and the local interplay among atmospheric circulation, erosion and exhumation, and lithospheric dynamics. The degree to which the latter effects govern the pace and style of plateau growth remains uncertain.  In this session, we seek to bring together cross-disciplinary approaches that integrate structural geology, geophysics, geomorphology, geochemistry, geo(thermo)chronology, paleoaltimetry, and numerical/analogue modeling, to investigate tectonic evolution of the circum-Tibetan Plateau orogen-basin systems.
