Crustal structure, deformation, and amalgamation of the Caribbean plate
Crustal structure, deformation, and amalgamation of the Caribbean plate
Session ID#: 79501
Session Description:
The Caribbean plate is presently 74% submerged and bounded by arcuate and volcanic or amagmatic subduction zones. The plate interior includes Paleozoic continental fragments in Central America, a Cretaceous large igneous province of Pacific origin, and areas of Jurassic or Cretaceous normal oceanic crust. The session seeks to better understand the transitions between collisional and subduction processes that affect the present-day, margins of the Caribbean plate - along with studies of older, accretionary processes that led to its Jurassic-Cretaceous amalgamation of presently intra-plate areas.
