Magnetic reconnection – connecting ideas from observations, experiments and models.

Session ID#: 74966

Session Description:
Whereby changing the connectivity of magnetic field lines, magnetic reconnection rapidly unleashes the magnetic energy stored in nature. Reconnection is critically important for coupling the solar wind and Earth’s magnetosphere, it can also trigger sawtooth crashes in thermal fusion devices. However, many aspects of magnetic reconnection remain unclear, including microscopic physics, the onset, particle energization, three-dimensional properties, the role of turbulence, et cetera.

Earth's magnetosphere and the solar winds are natural laboratories in which magnetic reconnection can be observed. On the ground, numerical simulations and terrestrial experiments offer alternative approaches to unravel the details of this critical process. Each path is proven to has its own advantages but also the limitations. Synthesizing knowledge learned from these different communities can reveal fundamental truths about how reconnection occurs.

In this session, we provide the venue to cross-fertilize our understanding of magnetic reconnection form modelers, observers, and experimentalists.
